In order for us to be a church that welcomes everyone and a church that is for everyone, we have to be willing to be bold, take some risks, think outside the box, and work in unconventional ways to help people find and follow Jesus. The question that Hinton asks in this message to all of us is, “What are you willing to do to help someone find and follow Jesus?”

To illustrate his point, Hinton uses a story from the beginning of the Gospel of Mark where some friends helped their paralyzed buddy through the roof in order to see Jesus. We should be willing to do whatever it takes to remove all unnecessary obstacles for someone to come into an encounter with Jesus, even if it means wrecking the roof, because at the end of the day, someone did that for us in some form or another.

Mike Breaux takes this one as he unpacks the story of the “Good Samaritan” in Luke 10 and how it pertains to investing in our relationships, particularly those whom we identified last week as our “four” we are going to focus on. If you haven’t listened to that message yet, we encourage you to do so.

The Good Samaritan is a great story, and we all love good stories. They’re powerful and Jesus was a master storyteller. He used lessons, props, humor, history, current events, and he told the stories or “parables” that were full of wisdom, insight, and truth. It’s almost as if he were painting a picture of God’s Kingdom with words and his listeners drank it up (for better or worse).

In this particular story, Jesus raises the question: “Who is my neighbor?” and invites us even today to ponder it. It reinforces the fact that God is for everyone and we should be as well, but it can’t happen without genuine risk, investment, and a hear that is captured by the love of God. Only then can the “eyes of our heart” be open to the world around us so we can team up with God in changing it for the better

Our world has gone through a rough few years. Many of us are confused, burnt out, and are looking for a new way to approach things because we’re beginning to realize it is necessary. COVID has shaken our world, our lives, schools, kids, mental health, and the future is so uncertain. Darkness has brought about racial and political divides and once again we need the love of Jesus to shine bright. With the right heart, the church can help share this light by being one itself.

In this message, Rusty challenges all of us to “find our four,” that is, begin to pray for, invest in, encourage, and invite those who are experiencing darkness in our own circle of relationships to experience that light, too. Being for everyone is a great concept, but it doesn’t work unless we are all on the same page and practicing what we proclaim.

On the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 is where we get the first recorded public message of the Apostle Peter, one of Jesus’ closest students. He delivers a fantastic message and drives it home by proclaiming that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Likewise, the Apostle Paul says something similar in Romans that “the gospel… is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” It goes on and on stating that God’s heart and God’s house is for everyone. Because of this, there is a lot of obstacles and resistance from the darker parts of our culture and our faith.

When the early leaders of the church proclaimed that it is for everyone, they were echoing their Teacher, Jesus. Jesus lived and died for such a message. It often got him in trouble but is also impacted the world like had never been done. Today, we live in this legacy and continue this story in our own communities. Jesus is for everyone, and so are we.
